What's this eSIM I keep hearing about?

If you travel internationally, chances are you've heard a lot about eSIMs lately. An eSIM is an "embedded SIM" that allows you to store your phone's SIM card information on a chip inside your phone. You can switch between mobile carriers without physically swapping out your SIM card.

eSIMs have been around for a while, but they've only recently become mainstream thanks to the release of newer Android phones, the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR.

What are the benefits of using an eSIM?

The two benefits of using an eSIM are convenience and cost savings. An eSIM allows you to use different carriers without physically swapping your SIM card. This is especially handy if you're traveling internationally and want to be able to use local data plans in each country. And because you're not locked into one carrier, you can compare different carriers, including those offering the cheapest data packages, which can yield significant savings over time.

How do I know if my device is compatible with eSIM?

Check out our FAQ section to see the list of devicesLink opens in a new tab that are compatible with eSIM.

What does it mean for my phone to be unlocked?

If a phone is locked, it means that your device can only use a SIM card provided by your network carrier – you can contact your provider to see if your phone is locked. However, if your phone is unlocked, that means that you are free to use any SIM plan you would like.

To check if your iOS supports eSIM and is unlocked, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Settings → General → About
  2. Scroll to “Carrier Lock”
  3. If it says “NO SIM restrictions,” your device is unlocked
  4. To see if the device is compatible, scroll to the “AVAILABLE SIM” section for iOS 15 and later or the “DIGITAL SIM” section for previous iOS versions. If you see IMEI under the sections, then you are good to go!

What are the options and how much does it cost?

When browsing the available eSIM data packages, you will see options for data, validity, and price. The data has various options, such as 1GB, 3GB, 5GB, 10GB, etc., and will give you a certain amount of access to data throughout your trip depending on the option you choose. The validity is the time in which the chosen package will be active before expiring. Finally, the price is simply the amount to pay for each respective package.

If at any time, you are running out of data or time, you can top-up the package (explained below) or download an additional package onto your device.

To top-up your package means to add another plan to the existing one you have – it is basically extending your access to data.
