You probably don’t think of budget travel when you think of Scandinavia; that’s understandable. Here’s the good news: with the help of this article, you can visit Billund—a gorgeous quaint town in Denmark—without breaking the bank. Billund, one of Scandinavia’s most unique cities, surrounds the famous LEGO toy company, founded in 1932. 

 

The Danish city is home to the massive Legoland theme park, offering a world based around famous plastic building bricks that have entertained children for generations. But Billund is also home to history, top restaurants dating back to the 18th century, and gorgeous surrounding nature.

1. Visit Skulpturpark

The best free attraction to start with is SkulpturparkLink opens in a new tab, one of Europe’s leading sculpture parks located in the heart of Billund. The park contains over 20 diverse sculptures along a paved pathway with a tranquil atmosphere that’s ideal for the summer months. 

 

Some of the sculptures are beautiful; other sculptures are strange. Either way, it’s an excellent place for anyone interested in art and design. It takes around one hour to walk through the park, making it perfect for a summer stroll after you visit Legoland.

2. Explore Legoland, Billund

Visiting Legoland certainly isn’t free, but it’s an unmissable attraction in BillundLink opens in a new tab. Better still, it doesn’t have to break the bank and in terms of valuable memories and endless fun, we think it's more than worth it. Legoland has various attractions and excellent structures, including the Acropolis and the Statue of Liberty. 

 

In addition, Legoland has four rollercoasters with various smaller rides for toddlers and kids—making it ideal for families. An entry ticket costs around €45, which isn’t too costly for Scandinavia. However, although it’s not super budget, a trip to Billund wouldn’t be complete without visiting Legoland.

3. Check Out Syvårssøerne’s Natural Landscape

On the doorstep of Billund—only a 6-minute drive from Syvårssøerne—you’ll find Syvårssøerne’s Natural Landscape, a truly stunning local area. There are various trails in the reserve; these are perfect for the summer months, especially if you’re a mountain biker, seasoned hiker, or simply enjoy a casual walk. 

 

In the summer months, you’ll find an abundance of wildlife and blossomed heathers. Don’t forget to pack yourself a picnic before you visit. And, better still, it’s completely free to enter the reserve and enjoy nature.

4. See Wildlife at Givskud Zoo

One of the top attractions in Billund is the Givskud ZooLink opens in a new tab, which opened back in 1969 when it was called “Løveparken” (the lion park). As a result, you can probably guess what animals they have at the zoo. Yes, lions. But the zoo also boasts over 70 different animal species and 700 animals. 

 

These animals include tigers, gorillas, rhinos, spiders, otters, and plenty more. If you have dinosaur fans in your group, you’ll love the Givskud Zoo because it has the largest dinosaur exhibition in Denmark. There are more than 50 dinosaur replicas, including a T-rex standing at 40 meters. The entry fee is around €21 for those over 12.

5. Enjoy the WOW PARK, Billund

If you’re checking out Billund on a budget, you’ll have to visit WOW PARKLink opens in a new tab. Here, you’ll discover sky-high entertainment over an area of 40 soccer pitches. You can enjoy a day of fantasy adventure and physical play with your friends and family. 

 

You’ll find giant swings, suspension bridges over 14 meters high, and underground caves. After a day of wandering around the park, why not enjoy a relaxing campfire and eat your favorite foods? You can borrow all grilling tools for free inside the park. Entry fees are around €30.

6. Enjoy Scandinavia's Largest Waterpark

Billund is one of the best places in Scandinavia for family fun, and the buzzing water park and resort—LalandiaLink opens in a new tab—has many incredible things to do. It’s also the biggest waterpark in Scandinavia. Not bad, right? 

 

You can choose either a day visit or a mini-break while you stay in one of Lalandia’s popular holiday homes. With so much on offer, it’s challenging to choose where to begin. You can ride some man-made waves, tumble down water slides, or enjoy the tropical climate of the Aquadrome.

7. See the Treasure Trove of Bindeballe Kobmandsgaard

A mere 15-minute drive from Billund, you’ll find one of the area’s most affordable and unusual attractionsLink opens in a new tab. When you step inside Bindeballe Kobmandsgaard, you’ll feel like you’re stepping back in time. The shop was created in 1897 and is home to oddities and rarities from around the globe.

 

Spend some time trawling through the history of the store while learning about old-fashioned toys and household items. You can even collect some tea and cake at the onsite cafe.

8. Relax in Vejle

Although Denmark isn’t notorious for its mountains—and there’s a good reason for that—the city Vejle and its surrounding area is mountainous by the nation’s standards with its forested hills. Vejle is just a 30-minute car journey from Billund and it's well worth the ride with its unique character and fun shopping experiences. Check out the iconic building The Wave at the waterfront.
